The Friedman family is committed to improving lives by supporting medical research.

The Gerald J. Friedman Center for Breast and Lymphatic Surgery is generously supported by the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman Foundation, on behalf of the Friedman family.

A Legacy of Compassion

During his illustrious 55-year career, Dr. Gerald J. Friedman pioneered clinical nutrition’s role in disease prevention. A brilliant and widely respected New York physician, Dr. Friedman specialized in diabetes and metabolism, endocrinology, cardiology, and internal medicine. He spent his distinguished career caring for thousands of patients at some of New York’s finest hospitals and was fascinated by medical research throughout his life. He served as National Director of Medicine for United Parcel Service for 37 years.

His legacy lives on through the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman Foundation, which is dedicated to continuing the philanthropic legacy of Dr. Friedman. The foundation supports and promotes medical research, especially in the areas of diabetes, nutrition, nephrology, neurology, and oncology.

The Friedman Center for Breast and Lymphatic Surgery was made possible by a member of the Friedman family who is passionate about helping individuals dealing with breast cancer, breast reconstruction, and cancer-related lymphedema. Through a generous endowment to Dr. Mark L. Smith, he and his esteemed reconstructive colleagues at Northwell Health were able to create the Friedman Center for Breast and Lymphatic Surgery to support women in feeling whole again.

The Friedman Foundation’s Work

Other projects and centers funded by the foundation include the Gerald J. and Dorthy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy (Tufts University), the Gerald J. Friedman Diabetes Institute (Beth Israel Medical Center NYC), and the Gerald J. Friedman Transgender Health & Wellness Program (Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health).

If you’d like to support research into breast reconstruction, consider making a donation to the Friedman Center.
